3 unusual facts about U.S. Open Badminton Championships

Tyna Barinaga

In 1964 Barinaga and fellow Port Angeles, Washington resident Caroline Jensen (Hein) became the first all-teenage team to capture the women's doubles title at the U.S. Open Championships.

Barinaga shared the mixed doubles title at U.S. Open in 1966, and won both singles and doubles at the same tournament in 1968.

Yao Ximing

Yao later migrated to the USA where he coached and played, winning the 1986 U.S. Open men's doubles with former Pakistani star Tariq Wadood.

Joseph Cameron Alston

Despite a career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation which sometimes interfered with his avocation, Alston is the only male player to win each of the sport's three basic events, singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, at both the U.S. National Badminton Championships (closed to foreign competition) and the U.S. Open Badminton Championships (open to foreign competition).
