Union Village developed because it was at the cross roads of old Great Road (Smithfield Road Historic District) (connecting Providence and Worcester) and Pound Hill Road (connecting the Blackstone River falls to Chepachet and Connecticut).

Union Village, along Rhode Island Route 146A achieved local prominence as an important stagecoach stop on the route along Great Road.
The Peleg Arnold Tavern off Great Road in Union Village in North Smithfield, Rhode Island was built around 1690 and is one the oldest homes in North Smithfield.
Their original Meeting House, built in 1719, was connected to a chain of Quaker Meeting Houses that were built along Great Road (near Union Village and Smithfield Road Historic District).
