He was then appointed research fellow at the Institute of Geography of the University of Bremen and conducted a research project on the private economic sector in China funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, which was followed by his habilitation (post-doctoral degree) thesis on the role of the individual (“informal”) economic sector for urban and social development.

Following the publication of The Hidden Hitler by the historian and University of Bremen professor Lothar Machtan, Hamann investigated claims about Hitler's homosexuality and appears in the 2004 HBO documentary film, Hidden Fuhrer: Debating the Enigma of Hitler's Sexuality, by the American documentarians Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
Some of the members of the group left Hungary whole, Mihály Vajda went as a visiting professor to different universities in different countries: first at the University of Bremen (Germany), then at the New School for Social Research in New York next to the Trent University in Peterborough in Canada and finally (already after his rehabilitation in Hungary) to the University of Siegen (Germany).
