Watkinson is situated on Bloomfield Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut, adjacent to the University of Hartford and serves students from sixth through 12th grade.

Watkinson also offers a postgraduate option, called The Academy at Watkinson, which allows students who have just graduated from high school to spend an additional year taking courses at Watkinson as well as the University of Hartford.

Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts of the D. C. Public Schools and attended college at the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford, where he studied with alto saxophonist, Jackie McLean.
Ireland trained at the Idyllwild Arts Foundation in Idyllwild, California, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Hartt School, a performing-arts conservatory at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut.
