Hammond graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1985 and began his internship and residency in general surgery for Blodgett Memorial Medical Center and St. Mary's Health Services until 1988.
He later graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and Tulane University.
He served as Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and as Chief Executive Officer of the University of Michigan Health System from 1997 to 2002.

For 2012, the National Conference will be held at the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI and the Hepatitis B Conference will be held in Boston, MA.
It is one of the largest student organizations on campus and raises money for the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, part of the University of Michigan Health System, and William Beaumont Hospital.
