Cuffe attended the Children's House Montessori School in Stillorgan, Gonzaga College in Ranelagh, the University of Maine at Orono, University College Dublin, and the University of Venice.
Over the years Pivato has been an invited speaker at the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto, The University of Montreal, Laurentian University, the California State University, Long Beach, the University of Warwick, U.K. the University of Venice, the University of Melbourne and other institutions.
He has subsequently taught in urban planning, geography, political science and Middle East departments, at various institutions, including: Curtin University, Australia; the Technion, Israel; the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and UC Berkeley, in the United States; the University of Cape Town, South Africa and the University of Venice, Italy.
He held for a number of years the chair of linguistics at the University of Bucharest; then, due to a conflict with the official regime, which imposed a brutal control over academics, he moved to Italy where he obtained temporary lectureships at the University of Pavia and University of Venice.
