After initially schooling in Port Clinton, McLeay finished his education in Adelaide, attending Unley High School and Muirden College before commencing work for local businesses.
After an education at Adelaide High School, he embarked on a teaching career; first as a student-teacher at Unley High School then at the University of Adelaide's Teacher Training College.
In 1944 Colebrook Home moved to Eden Hills in the south of Adelaide due to chronic water shortages, enabling her to attend Unley High School, a local public school, and obtain her Intermediate Certificate.
