As it had been since 1897, the club's home ground was Princes Park in North Carlton; additionally, it was standard for all clubs in the league at the time to play three or four matches per year at the neutral VFL Park in Mulgrave.
Waverley Park hosted its first football match in Round 3, 1970 (Geelong vs Fitzroy), and was known for over twenty years as VFL Park.
The game was between Melbourne and Hawthorn and the game was described as the most epic played at VFL Park, with Hawthorn winning from a goal kicked after the siren, by Gary Buckenara.
