He received honorary doctorates from Victoria University in the University of Toronto, and from McMaster University, and was made an honorary professor at Beijing University, the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and Heilongjiang University.
Born in Matilda Township, Dundas County, Upper Canada of German ancestry, he attended Upper Canada Academy in Cobourg, Canada West in 1839, Victoria College until 1845, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1847 from McGill College.
In 1830, with his brother John, he was a member of committee to establish the Upper Canada Academy, which later became Victoria College.
