Dr. Shatan had a longtime interest in war and trauma and became deeply involved with Vietnam veterans in the late 1960s, responding to an invitation by one of the founders of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Jan Crumb (later known as Jan Barry), to form "rap groups" for veterans to speak about their emerging reactions.
Vietnam veteran Dave Curry, in a review published by Vietnam Veterans Against the War, accused Burkett and his coauthor of displaying political partisanship, making "errors in research methodology," making misleading statements about Winter Soldier Investigation participants, and denigrating the experiences and motives of veterans who subsequently opposed the war.

A number of groups regularly meet in the space, including the Chicago Green Party, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, the Chicago branch of the Industrial Workers of the World, the latter two groups also rent office space at this facility.
