Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township in Viluppuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, near Puducherry in South India.
With a land area of 11,348 square kilometers, the Archdiocese of Pondicherry–Cuddalore extends over the Pondicherry and Karaikal civil districts of the Puducherry Union Territory and the civil districts of Cuddalore and Vilpuram of Tamil Nadu State.

Prior to 1993 it was part of the British-designated South Arcot district, which was in 1993 divided into Cuddalore and Villupuram districts, with Vangipuram falling into the latter.
