Recently, several community members and Western Carolina University have proposed that the village of Forest Hills become the town/city of Cullowhee, incorporating the present Forest Hills boundaries and areas near Old Cullowhee Road and NC 107.
MU's only non-loss came on a 59-yard field goal with no time left by freshman Barry Childers at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., for a 13–13 tie.

A major accomplishment of his time as Speaker was the creation of the Liston B. Ramsey Activity Center at Western Carolina University.
In 2009, the fortieth anniversary of his career in glass art was celebrated by an exhibition of 75 works at Toe River Arts Council in Spruce Pine, North Carolina; the exhibition travelled to Western Carolina University in 2010.
Western Carolina University aired a program in December 2010 on WWNC recreating Welles' 1938 broadcast of A Christmas Carol, including Arthur Anderson, who at age 16 performed with Welles in the original broadcast.
