Lord was a delegate to the Whig National Convention at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1840, and moved to Greenport in 1846 and engaged in agricultural pursuits and the cultivation of fruit and ornamental trees.
The 1848 Whig National Convention was a quadrennial presidential nominating convention of the Whig Party.
In 1844, he was a delegate to the Whig National Convention, and was elected as a Whig to the 30th, 31st, and 32nd U.S. Congress (March 4, 1847 – March 3, 1853).
He served as member of the state house of representatives 1836-1838, as member of the Whig National Convention at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1839, Whig presidential elector in 1840 and was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Twenty-seventh Congress in 1840.
