11 March – Widerøe Flight 933 crashed into the Barents Sea near Mehamn, killing all 15 on board; this accident remains highly controversial in Norway.
From 2000 the airport was served by Guard Air, but following their bankruptcy in 2001, services were taken over by Widerøe for six months, when Arctic Air won a one-year contract.
Mount Widerøe was mapped by Norwegian cartographers in 1946 from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and named for Viggo Widerøe, airplane pilot of this expedition.
Widerøe set up a "commando center" in their hangar and installed VHF radios to communicate with aircraft.
She flew Noorduyn Norseman and de Havilland Otter seaplanes and later Twin Otter on scheduled routes and mercy flights for Widerøe's Flyveselskap north of the Arctic Circle.
