The castle was created between 1107 and 1129, when William Giffard, the Chancellor of King Henry I, fortified the bishop's hall.
In August 1587 he received orders, probably those of sub-deacon, and in September 1589, the year of his advancement to the priesthood, was sent back to Rheims to succeed William Giffard as professor of scholastic theology.
He was author of De actibus Willelmi et Henrici episcoporum WintoniƦ, printed in Henry Wharton's Anglia Sacra, biographies of William Giffard and Henry of Blois.
