William Howard was the 1st Viscount of Stafford in the 17th century, and owned the land on which the current school is built.
A small red intaglio stone seal bears the arms of William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, dating the burial of the hoard between his ennoblement in November 1640 and the Great Fire of London in September 1666, which destroyed the buildings above.
This ennobled branch of the Howard family stems from the noted naval commander and politician Lord William Howard, senior son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk from his second marriage to Agnes Tylney.
Howard married Mary Butler, daughter of John Butler (or Boteler) and Elizabeth Villiers, and had two sons, Thomas, 2nd Baron Howard of Escrick, who married Elizabeth Mordaunt, daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough, and William Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Escrick, notorious both as a rebel and as an informer and double agent.
By his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Effingham, he left two sons: Henry Mordaunt, 2nd Earl of Peterborough and John, afterwards Lord Mordaunt of Reigate and Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon; and a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Thomas, son and heir to Edward Howard, 1st Lord Howard of Escrick.
Her grandfathers were the thirteenth Baron Petre and the fourth Earl of Wicklow.
This was at Warkworth, Northamptonshire, seat of the recusant Roman Catholic family, that of George Holman, whose wife, Lady Anastasia Holman, was a daughter of Blessed William Howard, 1st Viscount Stafford, a Catholic unjustly condemned and beheaded in the Titus Oates hysteria of 1678.
Stafford was attainted and the family lost the title; the title of Baron Stafford was returned to the Howard line in 1824 with the attainder being reversed but the title of Viscount was extinct as there were no male heirs.

The courts allocated William's personal property between his next of kin, Mary, Lady Andover, a granddaughter of Humphrey Jennens’s daughter Ann, and William Lygon, 1st Earl Beauchamp (1747–1816), a grandson of Hester Jennens, and a descendant of Thomas Lygon.
