In 1729, Gale was appointed to a commission to determine the boundary between North Carolina and Virginia along with Colonel John Lovick and William Little.
Named in honour of William Little, the English surgeon who described what became known as 'Little's disease', a spastic paralysis of both lower limbs which then became known as infantile cerebral palsy.
However, no action was taken until 1902, when the work was begun by William Little, a fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford.
