In 1712 the castle passed into the Sanderson family–one of whom, Robert Sanderson, made the castle the centre of a collection of antiquities and relics–and from there to the Milburns and in 1846 onto William Lowther, the Earl of Lonsdale.
Lowther was the son of Sir William Lowther, 1st Baronet, of Little Preston and Swillington, and his wife Anne Zouch.

In 1788 he succeeded his brother-in-law, Sir William Lowther, in the rectory of Swillington, which he held until his death.
