There are a number of notable buildings in the Abbeystead area: Cawthorne's Endowed School, rebuilt in the 19th century; Holme Farm opposite, also 19th century; and Abbeystead House, built in 1886 for the 4th Earl of Sefton.

He died in either late December 1794 or January 1795 and was succeeded by his only son, William.
Many saw themselves as the successors of William Molyneux and his 1698 pamphlet, The Case of Ireland's being Bound by Acts of Parliament in England, in which he made an argument disputing the right of the English Parliament to legislate for Ireland, as the kingdom had its own parliament.
Over the years, Aintree had been the site of private races between the Molyneux family and their friends, including the Stanleys.

In 1836, he founded the Waterloo Cup for coursing at Altcar, an event which was very popular in its heyday and attracted large crowds.
He died on 30 March 1759 and the title passed to Thomas' son, Charles.
