In 1844 it was given to Margaret W. Preston, as she was the favorite stepdaughter of her father's (William Preston) wife, Polly Wickliffe.
It was probably named for the local highway (then called Preston Street Road), which was in turn named after early Louisville landowner Col. William Preston.

He was the physician of General Robert E. Lee and family, as well as to the families of Generals Joe Johnston, Wade Hampton, William Preston, John C. Breckinridge, and of many members of the Confederate Cabinet and Congress.
Explorers Dr Alexander Collie and Lieutenant William Preston RN first came across what are now Lakes Preston and Clifton while exploring the coastline between Mandurah and Bunbury in 1829.
