On June 23, 1963, Swainson accompanied the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Detroit mayor Jerome Cavanagh, and approximately 125,000 people on a "Walk for Freedom" march down Detroit's Woodward Avenue.
The single "Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue" has become a traditional favorite for many Detroit radio stations, and has been included for many years as part of the Detroit Thanksgiving Parade.
This example of civic sculpture stands in a prominent location on the southeast tip of Campus Martius Park, where five principal thoroughfares—Michigan Avenue, Monroe Street, Cadillac Square, Fort Street, and Woodward Avenue—convene on the reconstructed traffic circle in front of Compuware World Headquarters.
