A number of years prior to his passing in 1980, Rabbi Hutner officially announced that Rabbi Schechter and Rabbi Yonasan David would both serve as co-equal roshei yeshiva of the Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin.
Upon the passing of Rabbi Hutner in 1980, leadership of the yeshiva passed to his son-in-law, Rabbi Yonasan David who then became its sole rosh yeshiva.
