Judging that the yacht Young America was the fastest of the regatta, however, the Team Dennis Conner syndicate petitioned and was granted the right to sail Young America in place of Stars & Stripes in an unsuccessful attempt to defend the succeeding 1995 America's Cup against New Zealand's Black Magic.
After winning the Defender Series, Conner opted to use the third syndicate that year, Young America, to defend the cup, losing to Team New Zealand, 5-0.
The 1995 Citizen Cup regatta was won by Stars & Stripes, however, the defending San Diego Yacht Club opted to race the second-place boat Young America, sailed by the winning Stars & Stripes crew, in the succeeding America's Cup races as it was thought that this would give them the best chance of beating Black Magic of New Zealand.
The vehicle has since been restored and returned to the ranch, which is now owned by the Young America's Foundation.
For their first season, the Union played only one game(this being against Young America), and won the game 25-8.

Cornelius Mathews (October 28, 1817 – March 25, 1889), was an American writer, best known for his crucial role in the formation of a literary group known as Young America in the late 1830s, with editor Evert Duyckinck and author William Gilmore Simms.
He died five months later, age 53, at his home in Young America, Minnesota west of Minneapolis.
In 1855 the New York Times reported that an American slave had been removed by Jamaicans from the brig Young America at Savanna-la-Mar and "set at large".
Originally named Dile Corporation, Young America began in 1972 as a three-client promotion fulfillment company in Plymouth, Minnesota.
