Though threatened by cowbird nest parasitism and habitat loss, it has successfully colonized suburban environments in the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area and may be fairly easily seen on the campus of Arizona State University.
Botflies (Oestridae) are the main cause of nestling mortality, but brood parasitism by Giant Cowbirds (Molothrus oryzivorus) also occurs, and the young cowbirds will feed on the fly larvae.
Nests may be parasitized by the Pin-tailed Whydah which lays its eggs in the nests of estrildid finches.
