unusual facts about late Pleistocene

Bermuda Flicker

Though most material is from Late Pleistocene deposits unearthed by Storrs L. Olson, David B. Wingate and others in the Admirals Cave, the Wilkinson Quarry, and in the Walsingham Sink Cave in Hamilton Parish in Bermuda in 1981 there is one bone, a tarsometatarsus from a juvenile, which is from a Holocene layer in the Spittal Pond.

Euphagus

A prehistoric relative, Euphagus magnirostris, is known from Late Pleistocene fossils found in the famous tar seeps of Rancho La Brea, California.

Hooded Merganser

A species of fossil duck from the Late Pleistocene of Vero Beach, Florida, was described as Querquedula floridana (a genus now included in Anas), but upon reexamination turned out to be a species closely related to the Hooded Merganser; it is now named Lophodytes floridanus, but the exact relationship between this bird and the modern species is unknown.

Pupilla loessica

Pupilla loessica was first described by Czech biologist Vojen Ložek (1954) from late Pleistocene loess from Předmostí near Přerov (Moravia, Czech Republic).

Teratornis

All remains except one Early Pleistocene partial skeleton from the Leisey Shell Pit near Charlotte Harbor, Florida (which may represent a different species or a subspecies) date from the Late Pleistocene, with the youngest remains dating from the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary.

Vanellus

If Viator picis, also from the Late Pleistocene of Talara, does not belong to an entirely extinct lineage, it might belong to that group too; it seems too large to be closely related to the smallish Pied Lapwing.
