unusual facts about living fossil

Mammals described in the 2000s

Notable among those described since 2000 are the Cypriot mouse, Mus cypriacus, and the Laotian rock rat, Laonastes aenigmamus, which represents a family (Diatomyidae) thought to be extinct since the Miocene, and has been described as a living fossil.

Meropeidae

There are two extinct genera, Boreomerope antiqua Novokschonov from the Middle Jurassic of Siberia and Thaumatomerope with three described species all from the Madygen Formation in Kyrgyzstan; as such, the extant members of this family can be considered living fossils.

Ōmura Bay

Another special inhabitant – sometimes characterised as a living fossil – is the horseshoe crab species Tachypleus tridentatus.
