Dahlhaus was honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Grand Cross with Star), a Blue Max, and accepted into the German Academy.
He was granted the Großen Bundesverdienstkreuz on 7 September 2007, then made an OBE in November 2007 "in recognition of his contributions to the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche and his significant contribution to the reconciliation of the British and German peoples in this project".
In 2004 he got the order of merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and became member of the “wall of fame” of the Heinz Nixdorf Computer Museum.
