Since 2005, CFXJ has constantly "tweaked" its sound, experimenting with combinations of rhythmic Top 40 and classic urban formats by adding artists such as The Black Eyed Peas, Gwen Stefani, Eva Avila and Pussycat Dolls, while still striving to satisfy hip hop and R&B enthusiasts by breaking new North American/international music in Canada, such as Chamillionaire, Young Jeezy, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and Akon.
This was most likely caused by the launch of Rhythmic Top 40 (now Mainstream Top 40) station CFBT-FM in 2002 and took away the majority of the station's younger audiences, which prompted CKZZ to seek an older audience that listened to the station in its 90's heyday.
Pronk (as part of Alice DeeJay) was also successful in the United States, where "Better Off Alone" reached number 3 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play, number 12 on the Rhythmic Top 40, and number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the spring of 2000.
On September 7, 2012, at 10AM, after playing "What Might Have Been" by Little Texas and the first minute and a half of "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks (which began repeating on the line "When the thunder rolls/and the lightning strikes..." before grinding to a halt that led into energizing sound effects featuring thunder and lightning), WZBK changed their format to Rhythmic Top 40, branded as "Energy 106.9".
Before October 2005, the station was rock WKBU, with previous formats including Rhythmic Top 40 (as WAIL), Adult Contemporary (as WLTS, Lite 105) and Adult Top 40 (as WKZN, "105.3 The Zone").
WNRG-FM is also the first station in the Saga Communications Rhythmic Top 40 line up to be launched on a full-powered signal, as their two other outlets in Des Moines (HITS99.9 K260AM/KIOA) and Champaign (HITS99.7 WIXY-HD3 & W259BG), broadcasts on simulcasting HD radio subchannels and FM translators.
In 2009, WZHT started to include rhythmic top 40 tracks in their playlist from the likes of Lady Gaga, Kesha, Justin Bieber, and Jason Derulo.
