Heavy crude oil, which is much more viscous than conventional crude oil, and tar sands, where bitumen is found mixed with sand and clay, are becoming more important as sources of fossil fuel.
Tar sands deposits (sometimes called oil sands) contain various mixtures of sand (or rock) with bitumen or heavy crude oil and not tar (e.g., the Tar Tunnel in Shropshire).
The trip was paid for by Shell Oil, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Transcanada, and other groups with financial interests in the Alberta tar sands and the Keystone Pipeline.
