The University of Czernowitz was founded in 1875 as the easternmost German-speaking university; Romanianization began in 1919.
He held this position until 1875 when he accepted the chair of canon law at the newly erected university of Czernowitz in Bukowina, Austria.
He became first director of the botanical garden in Czernowitz (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine) and later professor at the University of Czernowitz (now Chernivtsi University).
