The Robe

There was a sequel known as Demetrius and the Gladiators starring Victor Mature as the title character who fights in the Roman arena.

Despite its impressive run in publication, The Robe is more familiar today as a 1953 Biblical epic film that tells the story of a Roman tribune named Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) who commands the unit that crucifies Jesus Christ.


Corriganville Movie Ranch

Built on land purchased by Corrigan in 1937, the ranch provided scenery as well as man-made structures and sets, and was the backdrop for movies and television programs such as Fort Apache, Buffalo Bill in Tomahawk Territory, The Robe, The Lone Ranger, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Sky King, and Star Trek.

Hilda Crane

Philip Dunne was the screenwriter on three previous 20th Century Fox epic films which star Jean Simmons, The Robe (1953), Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954) and The Egyptian (1954).

Lloyd C. Douglas

Douglas then wrote Forgive Us Our Trespasses; Precious Jeopardy; Green Light; White Banners; Disputed Passage; Invitation To Live; Doctor Hudson's Secret Journal; The Robe, and The Big Fisherman.

The most popular was The Robe by Lloyd Douglas, which started the year at the top of the list and only dropped to No. 2 for one week, in March, to Mrs. Parkington, before finally ceding the top spot to John P. Marquand's So Little Time in mid-October.
