They moved to France on 18 August 1914, landing at Rouen.

During the Battle of Vitoria in 1813 the regiment captured a silver chamberpot belonging to King Joseph Bonaparte, brother of the Emperor Napoleon, which resulted in the regimental nickname of "The Emperor's Chambermaids".
The regiment was raised at Meerut in June 1941 from a cadre of personnel taken from the 14th/20th King's Hussars, and was assigned to 2nd Indian Armoured Brigade.
Webb was born in 1921, the second son of William and Lillian Webb, in Cologne, Germany where his father was serving as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in the then 14th King's Hussars while on duty in the occupation of the Rhine.
He undertook his National Service from 1957–59 and was commissioned into the 14th/20th King's Hussars serving in Germany before leaving to work as a trainee sales executive with Shell-Mex and BP.
