After World War II, the parallel divided Vietnam into Chinese and British controlled zones; this eventually formed the Communist North Vietnam and the anti-communist South Vietnam.

Background to the Vietnam War

In September 1945, Chinese forces (as agreed to at the Potsdam Conference) occupied Indochina south to the 16th parallel to supervise the surrender and repatriation of the Japanese.

Broadnose catshark

The broadnose catshark, Apristurus investigatoris, is a cat shark of the family Scyliorhinidae the holotype and only specimen being found in deepwater in the Andaman Sea in the Indian Ocean between latitudes 16° N and 10° N.

Indian swellshark

The Indian swellshark, Cephaloscyllium silasi, is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae found in the western Indian Ocean from Quilon, India and Sauqira Bay, Oman between latitudes 16° N and 10° N, from the surface to 300 m.
