The raids were commissioned by Lionel Murphy, the Attorney-General of Australia, who accused the ASIO of deliberately withholding vital information related to a group of Australian-based Croatian terrorists called the Ustasha.

As a result of the raids, the ASIO was investigated by a series of Royal Commissions.
In the aftermath of the 1973 Murphy raids on the headquarters of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), the existence of the UKUSA Agreement was revealed to Australia's Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.
