The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) had four teams receive a berth in the tournament, Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and ECAC Hockey each had three teams receive a berth in the tournament, while Hockey East had two berths.
Justin Abdelkader, sophomore forward for Michigan State, was named the Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player with the tournament-winning goal and two assists.

The tournament's Frozen Four – the semifinals and finals – will be hosted by ECAC Hockey at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The tournament championship was moved from small on-campus rinks to Joe Louis Arena, home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings.

The 1987 edition of the Tar Heels won their first ACC tournament championship and advanced to their first Final Four (1987 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship where North Carolina lost to Clemson University in the semi-final round.
Rönn was also chosen to referee in the men's ice hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Flatley attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he played for the Wisconsin Badgers men's ice hockey team for two seasons, helping the team capture the 1983 NCAA Men's ice hockey championship, and was himself named a tournament all-star, a WCHA first team all-star, and a 1983 All-American.
In the 19th season behind the bench he led the Bobcats to the 2013 Frozen Four where they lost the National Championship to arch rival Yale.
