French made his debut aged 16 at the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia, and played four matches, scoring 22 runs with a highest score of 13 in the debut match against Italy.
Although he was overlooked for the ICC Trophy team in March 1997, he was made the captain of the 'A' team that took part in the 1997 Wills Cup in Pakistan.
He was also a member of the Bangladesh team that won the ICC Trophy in 1997.

The following year, Zuiderent was selected in the Dutch squad for the 1997 ICC Trophy, but the team was unable to secure qualification for the 1999 Cricket World Cup.
He also took 33 wickets, his best bowling being 3/28 against the USA in the 1997 ICC Trophy.
