48th Fighter Wing

On 8 September 1986, US Navy Secretary John Lehman personally presented the Navy's Meritorious Unit Commendation to the 48th TFW for its participation in the operation.

Likewise, General Charles L. Donnelly, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, USAFE, visited RAF Lakenheath on 17 February 1987 and presented decorations to those who participated in the operation.

The new design incorporated the Statue of Liberty, and throughout Europe the 48th became known as the "Statue of Liberty" Wing.

He remained there until he assigned as Chief of Readiness of the 48th Fighter Wing and an assistant operations officer with the 493d Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath in England.

Meritorious Unit Commendation

As a result of Operation Eldorado Canyon on 14-15 April 1986, Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman Jr. awarded the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation to the men and women of a United States Air Force unit, the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing, the "Statue of Liberty Wing," whose F-111 aircraft participated in the operation.

She served two operational tours at RAF Lakenheath, England, with the 48th Fighter Wing; assignment to the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson AFB; and as an Air Liaison Officer supporting the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Red Cloud, South Korea.
