The station first went to air on 1 March 1979 at 10.30am, from a small area rented from the Queensland University of Technology’s Kelvin Grove campus.

In the early 1990s it became home to Australia's only archive of original recordings by women composers, donated by the International League of Women Composers in New York in liaison with Tania Peitzker.
The awards are administered by 4MBS Radio Station and Perform Magazine - a publication devoted to the performing arts.
Barry-Smith made his directorial debut at the 2001 4MBS Festival with Purcell's Dido and Aeneas in which he also sang the role of Æneas; this production won him the Perform 4MBS Award for Opera Production.
Tahu also conducted The Australian Amadeus Players (Mozart Symphonies 40 & 41) in the opening concert for the 2006 4MBS Festival of Classics.
