In 1950–1951, John W. Griffin and Ripley P. Bullen, the archaeologists with the Florida Board of Parks and Historical Memorials, did extensive archaeological excavations in the Fort San Carlos area.
A complete edition of Drayton's works with variant readings was projected by Richard Hooper in 1876, but was never carried to a conclusion; a volume of selections, edited by A. H. Bullen, appeared in 1883.
While chairing the Department, Bullen participated in a number of excavations sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation and the National Park Service in St. John and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
