In 1950–1951, John W. Griffin and Ripley P. Bullen, the archaeologists with the Florida Board of Parks and Historical Memorials, did extensive archaeological excavations in the Fort San Carlos area.
While chairing the Department, Bullen participated in a number of excavations sponsored by the William L. Bryant Foundation and the National Park Service in St. John and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A complete edition of Drayton's works with variant readings was projected by Richard Hooper in 1876, but was never carried to a conclusion; a volume of selections, edited by A. H. Bullen, appeared in 1883.
