A.F.C. Newbury

The new club was formed from the resources of three local clubs – Ecchinswell (founded 1906) (link to the village rather than the football team), Shaw Boys & Belles Juniors (established in 1972) and Wickham U17 Youth Team.

Now playing at St. Bartholomew's School, the penniless club struggled to attract good quality players and after a slow start they withdrew from the competition in October 2006.


James Pettit Andrews

Andrews married Anne, daughter of Thomas Penrose, rector of Newbury, and sister of Thomas Penrose the poet.

St Nicolas Church, Newbury

In Fuller's "History of the Worthies of England", published in 1663, it is stated: "John Winchcombe, commonly called Jack of Newberry... built the church of Newberry, from the pulpit westward to the tower inclusively, and died about the year 1520".

Victoria Park, Newbury

The A339 was in fact built on the path of a stream called the Minny Flush, because of the number of minnows to be found in it.
