Abberley

On the opposite side of Abberley Hill to the village, to the south of the Worcester-Tenbury road, lies Abberley Hall.

In 1405 Abberley Hill was at the centre of a protracted stand-off between two major medieval armies, that of Henry IV camped on Abberley Hill itself and the primarily Welsh army of Owain Glyndŵr (Owen Glendower) camped on nearby Woodbury Hill.


Abberley Hall

A 'chief messuage' was mentioned in 1309, and Habington says that “Abberley seemethe to have byn of owld the principall seat of the Lord Thony in this shyre”.

Doddingtree

The lower division consisted of the Manors of Abberley; Astley; Alton; Bayton; Bewdley; Doddenham; Dowles; Glasshampton; Mamble; Ribbesford; Great Witley; Rochford; Shelsley Beauchamp; Rock; Shrawley and Stockton.

Great Witley

Owain Glyndŵr's army of Welsh and French camped here for eight days in the summer of 1405 facing an army of King Henry IV at Abberley Hill.
