The village of Dinnet is a few miles west and is the first being located inside the famous Cairngorms National Park.
To this day, however, the wearing of the kilt by women is strictly forbidden at the Aboyne Gathering except for when performing two specific dances, the Pas de Basques and the Pas de Basques and Highcuts.
Five members competed at the Midland Regional Competition at The Soaring Centre (Husbands Bosworth), and others competed at the Bicester Regionals, Lasham Regionals, Competition Enterprise at Aboyne and The Northerns at the Yorkshire Gliding Club (Sutton Bank).
The township also contains the smaller communities of Aboyne, Alma, Belwood, Dracon, Ennotville, Inverhaugh, Living Springs, Oustic, Pentland Corners, Salem, Shiloh, Simpson Corners, Speedside and Spier, and the ghost town of Ponsonby.
Charles Gordon, 11th Marquess of Huntly PC, DL, JP (5 March 1847 – 20 February 1937), styled Lord Strathavon until 1853 and Earl of Aboyne between 1853 and 1863, was a Scottish Liberal politician.
Aboyne was a member of the powerful Gordon family, who were notable for their Roman Catholic sympathies in a kingdom where supporters of the Protestant Reformation controlled the central government.
