During the Revolutionary War, Ogden and his brother Samuel sided with the Patriots, while their father David and brothers Isaac, Nicholas and Peter sided with the Loyalists.
He was the second son of Philip Henry Lawrence, solicitor, later barrister, of Chelsea, London, whose mother was Frances S. Ogden, the youngest child of a well known New Jersey legal family, her father being Abraham Ogden.
