Adlam is known as a soloist for his performances of the concerti by Tchaikovsky, Paganini, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Wieniawski, Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi.

As co-founder and artistic director of the International Freden Music Festival (Internationale Fredener Musiktage) in Germany, Adlam is responsible for the programming and commissioning of new works by some of the leading contemporary composers.
Burchell came across the species a number of times between 1811 and 1814, but it seems to have reached Europe only as late as 1893 by a Mr. Max Leichtlin from Baden-Baden, and oddly in the same year by a Mr. Gumbleton, who had received seeds from a Mr. Adlam in Natal.
Adlam was twenty two years old, and a temporary second lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place on 27 September 1916 at Thiepval, France, for which he was awarded the VC.

Adlam served in the Second World War with the Royal Engineers (Movement Control Section), and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel.
