Afognak

The United States Census of 1890 noted a series of settlements along the beachline near the Alutiiq village of Ag’waneq (also called Afognak), including Rutkovsky village, inhabited by a group of retired employees of the Russian-American Company.

The descendants of the Native inhabitants of the island are officially recognized as the Native Village of Afognak, most of whom live in Port Lions or Kodiak.

Afognak, Alaska

It was located on Afognak Bay on the southwest coast of the island, three miles north of Kodiak Island.

With help from the Lions Club and the federal government, a new community was constructed on the northeast coast of Kodiak Island, called Port Lions in honor of the Lions Club who helped relocate the village.

Afognak was located on the southwestern shore of Afognak Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, USA.

Loren Leman

Loren Dwight Leman (born December 2, 1950) was the tenth Lieutenant Governor of Alaska, traces his family history in Alaska to a marriage in Kodiak more than 200 years ago between a Russian shipbuilder and an Alutiiq woman from Afognak.
