The 10th Canto, 22nd Chapter of Bhāgavata Purāṇa, mentions young marriageable daughters (gopis) of the cowherd men of Gokula, worshiping Goddess Kātyāyanī and taking a vrata or vow, during the entire month of Mārgaśīṣa, the first month of the winter season (Śiśira), to get Śrī Kṛṣṇa as their husband.

It is celebrated annually on a Tuesday in the month of Mangsir (the eighth month of the Nepalese calendar), after the Marghashirsha (the first month of winter) Sukla Pratipada with a black she-goat (if possible).
Shanti Ashram was founded for the first time by Swami Nigamananda on Akshay Tritiya at Kumilla Durgapur in 1314 B.S. Then Shanti Ashram was shifted to Gendaria in Dhaka in 1318 B.S. Sri Gouranga Anath Niketan was founded there on 26th Agrahayana 1318 B.S. The noble purpose behind it is to serve the distressed, the grieved, the sick and the poor.
