Sixteen Aichi E13A floatplanes were launched by the heavy cruisers accompanying the carriers at 0430 to search for the Americans; the three carriers launched a follow up wave of 13 B5Ns at 0520.


Battle of Makin

By July 1943 the seaplane base on Makin was completed and ready to accommodate Kawanishi H8K "Emily" flying boat bombers, Nakajima A6M2-N "Rufe" hydrofighters and Aichi E13A "Jake" Recon-hydroplanes.

Operation Mo

Supporting this force was the 25th Air Fleet, (Yokohama Air Corps) led by Rear Admiral Sadayoshi Yamada, based in Rabaul, Lae, Salamaua, Buna and Deboyne island, composed of 60 Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" fighters, 48 Mitsubishi G3M "Nell" and 26 Aichi E13A "Jake" and Mitsubishi F1M "Pete" reconnaissance seaplanes.
