On 7 September Brandenburg launched a Sea Lynx helicopter to perform a reconnaissance mission on a suspected skiff just south of Al Mukalla, Yemen.

The Action of 7 September 2009 took place when the German frigate Brandenburg, taking part of Operation Atalanta, chased and captured a pirate skiff south of Al Mukalla, in the Gulf of Aden, after suspicious activity was spotted on the small vessel by the frigate’s helicopter during a reconnaissance mission.
The College of Medicine of the Hadhramout University is located in Al Mukalla.

In 1934, British traveller and explorer Freya Stark began her journey into the hinterland of the Hadhramaut from Al Mukalla, and her stay in that city is recorded in her book, The Southern Gates of Arabia.
On 9 May 1982, an Alyemda de Havilland Canada Dash 7 (registered 7O-ACK) crashed into the sea upon approaching Aden International Airport following a scheduled flight from Al Mukalla.

On 27 August 1993, an Alyemda Boeing 737-200 was hijacked during a scheduled domestic flight from Al Mukalla to Al Ghaydah by an armed person who demanded to be taken to either Kuwait or Oman.
