In May 2008, Lt. Gen Sarath Fonseka of the Sri Lanka Army held talks with his Pakistan Army counterparts regarding the sale of military equipment, weapons and ammunition.

However, no order for the tank was placed despite the symbolic naming of the tank after Khalid ibn al-Walid.

Al-Khalid was revealed on 17th July, 1991, by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, along with the then Pakistani Chief of Army Staff, Mirza Aslam Beg, in a ceremony held at the Heavy Rebuild Factory (HRF), Taxila.

He also started the Al-Zarrar and Al-Khalid main battle tank projects while working as the director-general of Heavy Industries Taxila.
